The Izmailovo Hotel complex (Hotels: Izmailovo - Alfa, Beta, Vega, Gamma-Delta) was built in 1979 on the site of the historic Izmailovo village and Royal Estate, whose remaining buildings are clustered just a 10-minute walk east of the hotel. The first mention of the Village of Izmailovo in the register was in 1571 as of the Boyar's Izmailov estate. The village was founded by Nikita Izmailov. After the boyar's death Ivan the Terrible took over the village and all its chattels and it became a royal patrimonial estate. It reached heyday during the reign of Alexey Mikhailovich. In 1679 the Cathedral of the Protection of the Virgin was erected on the island located in the very center of the estate. Its architects and builders were Grigory Zamoischikov, Dmitry Mechnov, Gavrila Petrov and Ivan Schelkunov. The Cathedral still remains one of the grandest structures in Russia. With its total height of 57 meters, its central cupola rises 18 meters high, which is as tall as a modern 6-storey building. The Royal Stead that held a palace built of timber, which was the residence of the tsar and the royal family, took up major part of the site.

4,000 peasants brought to the royal estate worked there at any given time. The magnitude of this unique estate may be judged by the number of some of the services it comprised: a farm-yard, an orchard, a mulberry orchard, a vineyard, numerous conservatories and hothouses, a medicinal herb garden with a apothecary and glassworks that manufactured bottles and jars as well as household glassware.

Next to the island was a large menagerie that held various exotic animals. Skilled gardeners were brought from abroad to care for plants. Special attention was paid to cotton-plants and mulberry trees required to produce silk. Annual profit to the royal treasury generated by the well-managed estate was about a thousand rubles.

Owned by the Romanov boyars since the 16th century, the estate was the favorite retreat of Tsar Alexei and his son, the future Emperor Peter The Great. Peter spent much of his childhood at that place. It was there, in the shed of the flax yard, that the young Peter found the boat, which was destined to become "the grandfather of the Russian fleet". This tiny English-build boat had been bought by Nikita Romanov and, forgotten by everyone, had for a long time been waiting for the hour when young Peter would extract it from underneath a pile of useless lumber. The old boat amazed Peter by its ability to move under sail against the wind and execute complex maneuvers. Upon his victory in the Northern war in 1721 Peter the Great remembered the tiny boat. The boat found once in Izmailovo sailed accompanied by gun salute along a line of battleships in Kronstadt. The boat was steered by the Tsar himself while the oarsmen were the celebrated admirals. So, his early passion for sailing grew and eventually led him to not only found the Russian Navy and launch Russia as a great European Naval power, but build the great port city of St. Petersburg on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. A "toy" fortress, the prototype of future fortifications of Kronstadt and St. Petersburg was built not far away from Izmailovo, near the village of Preobrazhenskoye on Peter's order. The fortress used to be stormed by the "toy" regiments, which then formed the backbone of the regular Russian army.

During the 1980 Moscow Olympics the Izmailovo Hotel complex (Hotels: Izmailovo - Alfa, Beta, Vega, Gamma-Delta) was used to accommodate many of the athletes attending the games and although not centrally located, the hotel offers clean and comfortable rooms at very reasonable rates. Just across the road from Izmailovsky Park metro station where trains will whisk you in twenty minutes to Red Square, the Kremlin and all the other fascinating places of interest in Moscow (the hotel is 6 stops from Red Square and the centre of the city). It takes only 3-5 minutes walking to reach the Izmailovo - Vega lobby and the reception desk.

Of particularly interest to tourists, is the neighbouring Izmailovo Weekend market (the Vernisage as it is known operates on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year (wrap up in the Winter!) and prices are excellent in comparison to other tourist venues in Moscow), one of the city's major tourist attractions due to its extensive array of traditional Russian gifts and souvenirs from the country.
